GEICO Insurance (Everything you need to know)

GEICO is one of the most well-known insurance companies in the United States, if you recognise it as the gecko or the caveman. The Maryland-based corporation is a Berkshire Hathaway wholly-owned affiliate that insures more than 27 million cars owned by more than 16 million policyholders. It's a power to be reckoned with in the insurance business.

A brief history of GEICO

GEICO was founded in 1936 by Leo and Lillian Goodwin, a husband and wife team who took the risk of starting a new business during the Great Depression. The Government Employees Insurance Corporation was established with the original clientele of federal employees and some groups of enlisted military officers in mind. GEICO had written 3,700 regulations and employed 12 people in less than a year.

Benjamin Graham, a Columbia University business professor, decided to invest in GEICO in 1948. This was a watershed moment in the company's history because Graham would later teach a young Warren Buffet at Columbia, establishing the famed GEICO-Buffett connection. Buffet went to Washington in 1951 to read more about GEICO and hooked up with Lorimer Davidson, an investment banker and good friend of the Goodwins. Following this meeting, Buffet agreed to purchase GEICO stock, and the rest, as they say, is history.

When Goodwin stepped down in 1958, Davidson was chosen as his replacement. He went on to lead the company through a 20-year stretch of steady expansion, reaching one million policyholders in 1964 and $150 million in insurance premiums in 1965. In the 1970s, growth slowed, and the company's loss reserves were beginning to suffer as a result of years of rapid expansion.

GEICO replied by practicing cautious underwriting, which prompted Warren Buffet to make his second appearance in 1976, when he allegedly bought $1 million worth of GEICO stock. GEICO launched a 24-hour, 365-day-a-year calling service for claims, purchases, and distribution in the 1980s. The company's customer-centric model is still in place today.

Buffet’s Berkshire makes the bid

Under the leadership of new chairman, president, and CEO Olza “Tony” Beautifully, GEICO expanded from strength to strength in the early 1990s. In 1995, Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway investment firm made an offer for the remaining shares of GEICO stock, and by 1996, the company had become a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary.

“GEICO never offers its policies to insurance brokerages or private agencies,” according to the GEICO website. GEICO Area Agents are sole agents for GEICO and partner companies, and they are not permitted to represent all other insurance companies that compete with GEICO and partner companies. GEICO Local Brokers can market insurance not sold by GEICO and affiliate companies with GEICO's prior approval.

“GEICO Local Agents are company owners who solely serve GEICO and its land partners. Their main responsibility is to find and produce insurance leads and plans that GEICO would otherwise miss.”

The gecko and the caveman

The GEICO gecko made his advertising debut in 1999 and quickly became a popular symbol for the firm. The idea spawned from a common mispronunciation of the GEICO name as “Gecko”. The key aim of the GEICO gecko is to “save people money” on their car insurance. Five years later, the GEICO Caveman entered the scene with the “So easy a Caveman can do it” ad campaign.
